- It’s All Allowed is an anthology co-edited by Deirdre Heddon and Dominic Johnson, with editorial responsibility for the project shared equally. The editorial responsibilities undertaken by Heddon and Johnson, on equal terms, were:
1. Primary Archival Research, working through the Adrian Howells Archive, at the Scottish Theatre Archive (University of Glasgow). At the time of undertaking this research, the Adrian Howells Archive was uncatalogued. Heddon and Johnson reviewed the full archival collection, to i) construct the first comprehensive biography of Howell from original documents ii) identify and index photographs for reproduction iii) identify and categorise documentational material that would bring evidence and texture to the publication and make documents accessible to future researchers iv) make high resolution photographic copies of documentation v) obtain permission for reproduction of archival materials from Howells’ Estate. Archival work was underpinned by a commitment to identifying and making legible Howells’ professional trajectory, including relationships and collaborations; his processes of performance making and how these developed across the decades of his performance practice; the original contributions he made to the practice of one-to-one and intimate performance.
2. Co-authorship of two opening chapters: an overview and analysis of Howells’ work and a biography of his professional trajectory. These two chapters drew extensively on the archival research.
3. Curating, commissioning and editorialising of 14 new pieces of writing from scholars and artists to ensure multiple and diverse perspectives on Howells’ output, and providing authors with archival material as needed.
4. Review, selection and editorial revision or abridgment of nine previously published works.
5. Selection and placement of all images included in the anthology, working closely with designer David Caines, and sourcing and securing permissions where required.
6. Overall editorial oversight, including structure, aesthetics, layout, and project management of publication.
Material Published before 2014: The majority of the essays, 15 out of 24, are new commissions. Two essays within the collection are abridged versions of work submitted to REF2014 (24 pages out of 336). Neither of these was by Heddon.
