- The book is based upon original research conducted in some 200 private archival collections dispersed across France in 52 departmental depots. Gathering this historical evidence required very extended, time consuming immersion in the archival documentation to transcribe the sources on site. In some cases prior liaison with archivists was needed to arrange the essential authorisation for access from the owners of the documents. Immersion in complex French legal and jurisprudence records was also essential to achieve the synthesis of socio-cultural history with history of law. The translations from French were all done by the author.
