- Wide-ranging work with detailed historical analysis covering over three centuries, multiple cultural and linguistic contexts. Beyond the close analysis of Pauline data and precursors to it, the book also includes lengthy individual chapters devoted to five early Christian authors. All primary texts are analysed in their original languages – whether Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, or Latin. Research for the book thus required mastery of a number of different historical, linguistic, and scholarly domains. The book was written over a six-year period and at three major research institutions.
