- This manuscript describes a novel approach to form hydrogels of ionotropic polymers. Until now, no simple and versatile method existed to gel such polymers, which possess widespread uses within tissue engineering, cell encapsulation, food technology, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. This novel strategy represents a significant advance since it simplifies and/or facilitates a wide range of applications, such as 3D printing, microfluidic-based cell encapsulation and injectable preparations. This work gained significant attention, leading to a prestigious award for the lead author (The Royal Norwegian Science Society prize), a patent (WO/2017/153947) and a spin-out company (Nordovo Biosciences; contact available on request
