- American Images of China: Identity, Power, Policy took 4-5 years to complete. It is the adapted version of a PhD thesis which took four years, plus another six months to convert into a commercial volume. The book engages intensively and extensively with archive materials, some of which were gathered from short periods of fieldwork in the United States, including museums, libraries, and other sites. Many materials in the book are not digitised or are only available in the US, and collectively span around 250 years. It occupies a unique place in the literature mainly for these reasons.
