- Working with industry (Siemens MCT, now SIMEC Atlantis, contact: Jeremy Thake, jeremy.thake@simecatlantis.com), the results presented in this paper informed an experimentally-validated prognostic model of a turbine gearbox to predict fatigue life which resulted in further insight that turbulence in tidal conditions is likely to shorten gearbox life compared to atmospheric turbulence. This work led to a successful bid for the €2,188,839 Interreg project MONITOR EAPA_333/2016 (www.atlanticarea.eu/project/26) studying reliability of tidal energy devices more broadly.
