- Password manager (PM) adoption has a ceiling of around 10% of users. This study deployed a Smartphone recommender App, where people specified their preferred PM features and then recommended matching PMs. During the process, the app satisfied participants’ self-determination needs (autonomy, relatedness and competence). We found that when autonomy and relatedness needs were satisfied, they were more likely to install a password manager (the app detected whether a PM was installed). The research demonstrates the efficacy of a needs-satisfaction approach in cyber security.
