- This book presents research conducted during Simmons’ PhD (2005-2010). The theoretical work was extended during the writing of the book (2011-2013). The volume offers critical insights into the limitations of psychological theory in the field by performing a complex and extended multi-layered analysis of research data. This is done by applying behavioural and cognitivist lenses, and by developing and applying a novel phenomenological lens about embodied consciousness for profoundly disabled children. In addition to contributing substantial analysis, the book’s extensive research enables a critical examination of the challenges of research design in the field, before advocating a novel participatory methodology.
