- This output highlights the professional relevance of the curating new media art research, which relates to think-tank, consultancy, professional development and symposia activity rather than purely academic writing. This particular event was an all-expenses paid member of a think tank concerning "Media in the Expanded Field" for curators and museum professionals. It was organised by Montabonel, as part of a series of events, the previous event being at Tate Modern. The think tank was held over a week at the Casa Wabi architect-designed artists' retreat in Mexico. Other members of the Think Tank include Pip Laurenson of Tate, Morgan Quaintance of Cubitt, author Douglas Coupland, and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, an Mexican/Canadian artist who represented Mexico at the Venice Bienniale.
I was invited keynote speaker with the presentation “Collecting New Media Art”, which was based upon my 5-year thread of research specializing in collecting issues. The keynote was followed by discussion on collecting in particular, and documentation of the analyses. The post-event publication was beautifully produced.
Similarly, I was invited to Vancouver to as a keynote speaker at a public symposium, but also to write a chapter for a book, and to consult at a think-tank closed group event. I had interviewed the curator of Surrey Art Gallery for the CRUMB web site in 2004, and this thread of research was now feeding into their Techlab 20th Anniversary publication, and consultation of digital art best practices for their Digital Strategic Plan, and plans for a new Interactive Art Museum.
Running a yearly professional curators’ course in London, which is well-documented, also helps to analyse the evolution of current issues, and integrate academic and professional research.
