- Memorializing the GDR is a substantial monograph of ca. 140,000 words, which demonstrates sustained research effort and extensive scope in the following ways: a) primary research was conducted in thirteen different towns across eastern Germany (and ten different locations within Berlin), requiring access to national, local, institutional and private archives and collections, as well as the nurturing of extensive contacts with different organisations; b) research was conducted over an eight year period in order to capture significant dynamic change, c) the monograph brings together numerous disparate case studies, requiring extended reflection on contrasting historical, social and political movements.
