- This recording is the latest in a series documenting and consolidating Sheppard Skærved ’s work with Henze, which began when the violinist was in his late teens. His three previous discs (Naxos & Metier) include the complete Violin Concertos (including a live recording with the composer), as well solo works written for this violinist.
This disc is the first to bring together Henze’s sonata-type pieces for violin alone, and violin/viola with piano. The works recorded stretch from the beginning of Henze’s composition studies with Wolfgang Fortner in 1946, to 1989 and the first period of close collaboration with this violinist.
Collaboration with Roderick Chadwick enabled exploration of the freedoms which Henze offered his close collaborators, and of the distance which the composer required his trusted performers to journey from the apparent strictures of the score. The question of ‘what is faithfulness’ to the score, in what might be termed post-collaborative circumstances, drove the research, workshopping and recording process for the project.
The recording of the original version of the Solo Sonata (1977) is of particular interest as it results from a conversation between the composer in and the violinist, when he was recording the revised (abbreviated) 1994 version of this sonata: Henze authorized him to return to the earlier version after his death.
The recording was released on Naxos (Naxos: 8573886) in 2017. The CD comprises: Hans Werner Henze, Sonata for Violin and Piano (1946), Sonata for Solo Violin (original version, 1977), Sonata for Viola and Piano (1979), Sonatina for Violin and Piano 1979, ‘Für Manfred’ (1989), ‘Peter Doll zum Abschied’ (1999).
