- This pioneering research presents a cognitive neural network architecture that enables a robot to simultaneously learn both, sensorimotor skills (finger counting) and linguistic skills (using number words). This highlights the importance of sensorimotor skill learning for the acquisition of abstract knowledge. The work led to follow-up grants about number understanding in robots and children totalling more than £1m, eg EP/P030033/1 from EPSRC to Di Nuovo, the H2020 ETN "eLADDA", and the H2020 ITN "APRIL". The work featured in a BBC Documentary (August 2017) and contributed to the cover article for Scientific American in March 2018.
