- This research promotes international networks in discussion, exhibition and exchange for debate about the nature of the reproducible image and the role of print in the changing landscape of technology and the dissemination of art practice. It contributes to the expanded field of printmaking, as an investigation of experimental artists’ work exploring relationships between print media, interdisciplinary art forms and new technologies.
The RE:PRINT/RE:Present exhibition and symposium at the Ruskin Gallery, Cambridge, co-curated with artist Mark Graver (UK/NZ) examined continuing technological developments in reproductive media on the trans-medial art practice of 20 early, mid-career and established artists, art-professionals and research students. Participants were commissioned to contribute new images and texts to be used as ‘raw material’ in the production of re:print Artist’s Book, a new collaborative development. A hybrid of artwork and publication, it presents a further enquiry into 21st Century representation and reproducibility.
Insights: re:print Artist’s Book, Co-edited with Duncan Ganley (Anglia Ruskin University), enabled participants from the RE:PRINT/RE:Present exhibition and symposium to contribute a new project with new ideas, experience and skills outside of an exhibition context. It facilitated a new mode of address and expression in the artist’s book form. The project addresses notions of the multiple, reproduction and reproducibility in contemporary art-practice through the re-positioning of contemporary print media and its relationship to the digital.
Dissemination: RE:PRINT/RE:Present, exhibition and symposium were public launch events. re:print Artists’s Book, received Arts Council funding. Dissemination highlights include: launch at Bookart bookshop, London; Impact 10 ENCUENTRO International Multi-disciplinary Printmaking Conference, Santander, Spain (2018); ‘Rethinking Repetition in a Digital Age’, CRASSH, Cambridge University (2019), and essay by Duncan Ganley about re:print for peer-reviewed journal AI & Society. re:print Artist’s Book was externally reviewed in international printmaking journals Printmaking Today (2019) and Impact International Journal of Printmaking Inaugural Issue, (2020).
