- This book, containing a historical introduction, translation and commentary of the “Nestorian” Christian inscription from the Chinese Tang period (a total of 299 pp.) is a major contribution to the ongoing research of the inscription, and it is the most detailed so far to be published in German. The research that has gone into this book is considerable. The monograph equals a large number of standard-length articles and contains plenty of new observations and interpretations and is as such a major contribution to research.

- English abstract
- This is a German translation of the famous Chinese stele-inscription of Xi’an from the year 781 which is the most important document for the study of the history of early Christianity in China. The translation is accompanied by an introduction and an extensive philological and historical commentary which contextualizes the document in the wider setting of religious history of the first half of the Tang dynasty and demonstrates the propagandistic intentionality behind the historiographical self-representation of the Church of the East in the framework of the politics of the Tang empire.
