- Steele’s 92,000-word monograph demonstrates sustained research that commenced with doctoral study (2010-2014) and five years of further research (2014-2019). The book is an English-language analysis of French-language Belgian cinema, and offers a major contribution to film studies by drawing distinctions between local, national and transnational frameworks in both representational and industrial terms. In 2015 the author received a Small Research Support grant from the Society of French Studies, enabling archival research at the Cinémathèque Royale in Brussels that supported a multi-perspectival analysis of how filmmakers, their films, and patterns of policy and production inform both a regional and transnational cinema.
