- The received signal strength (RSS) of wireless signals conveys important temporal and physical environment information widely exploited in wireless communications, localisation and tracking. This paper is significant because it challenges the classic assumption of Gaussian noise models of RSS measurements. It further extends the Allan Variance to characterise coloured noise components of RSS and demonstrates the applications in modelling and localisation. This work is sponsored by the Royal Society-MOST Grant (No. 185730) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh-NSFC Grant (NNS/INT 15-16 Casaseca).
