- This paper provides the mathematical framework for general resource theories, an area of research that is now particularly prominent in quantum computation and quantum information (QCQI). The approach presented in the paper has become a widely-adopted template in the area. It also encompasses generalised resource theories beyond QCQI, an emergent area of study. See, for example, Chubb et al., in Quantum 2018 (https://doi.org/10.22331/q-2018-11-27-108), and the 2019 CUP book An Invitation to Applied Category Theory (https://doi.org/10.1017/9781108668804), which identifies our framework as one of the seven main areas of current activity.
