- This is the first study to quantify ship ownership periods and thereby provide data on which rational assumptions can be made for payback period in the evaluation of retrofitted engineering products on ships. The research has shown that the buying and selling behaviour of ship owners does not fit the generally accepted model and provides a new model based on objective evidence. Crucially, the payback potential is greater than generally perceived and the work demonstrates incentive to develop retrofit propositions for carbon reduction in shipping.
