- This book had a long gestation: the research that led to its writing originated in a 2004 PhD thesis. The monograph has a broad scope investigating both the ancient and modern reception of its subject in extensive detail. Producing the volume required collecting a great and diverse variety of Greek and Latin texts for subsequent lengthy analysis. This work was used to develop an understanding of the complex unfolding of the cultural construction of the image of Xerxes. The theme is considered in great depth from a variety of perspectives and changing contexts from the ancient world and contemporary times.
