- This 20,000 word article brings together visual and technical analyses of artworks with enquiries into ancient Roman, medieval and Renaissance theories of portraiture and medieval history writing.
The essay involved protracted research and the transcription and translation of Latin and Italian language primary textual sources and the integration of literature in Italian, French and German. The visual analysis and its presentation involved securing bespoke photographic material which was also analysed using digital techniques. All elements of the project involved repeated visits to Italy.
