- The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Brass Instruments is the first major work of reference dedicated to brass instruments. It embraces all musical periods and styles, and the inclusion of regional entries ensures the cultural diversity of its content. Prof Herbert wrote the prefatory interdisciplinary essay and 83 entries. Originality is evident in the unique design of the book: the entirely new resources it provides for non-western music, bibliographical sources and catalogues of instrument makers significantly extend those provided in existing publications including the Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments. Unambiguously it is a reference book, but it embraces multiple levels of original research in which he has been the leading executant. His personal contributions cover a diverse range of topics from the Renaissance to jazz and several topics in which he is the major authority, such as the many wind instrument combinations to which the word ‘band’ is attributed. He has also contributed major entries on topics on how key themes can be applied to the history of brass instruments, such as Gender and Iconography. The book was cited in Choice, the journal of the US Association of College and Research Libraries, as one of the Outstanding Titles of 2019.
