- This interdisciplinary monograph (literature, book history, art history) is c.110,000 words, representing 6.5 years of research. It was issued by a major international publisher after rigorous anonymous peer review. It works across multiple medieval (and modern) languages, being the first to bring together texts in French, German, Castilian, Dutch, and English. It analyses material not previously studied together (manuscript and print, images and written texts) and addresses several little-studied texts, one newly discovered by the author. The book required mastery of several disciplines and languages, and of existing scholarship in multiple national traditions, while also offering original research and analysis.
