- Additional information
- The complete project consists of 6 CDs on the Grand Piano label. Encompassing the entire oeuvre for piano of Mily Balakirev, it seeks to establish Balakirev in the mainstream of pianistic repertoire. The CDs comprise not only the “complete” works published between 1951 and 1954 in the Soviet Union, but also those that are currently unpublished, a number of which are not listed correctly, if at all, in scholarly resources.
The first CD entered the public domain before the current REF publication period, while the remaining five CDs have been completed and released since 2014. The set is the first recording of the complete piano works, including the premiere recording of many works. Processes of investigation concentrated on resolution of incomplete and incorrect information regarding Balakirev’s output, including omissions and misconceptions in catalogues of his works referenced in other current scholarly resources. There was also exploration of issues of transcription and completion of unfinished works. Close consultation of manuscript sources was required to cast new, definitive light on areas of textual doubt in published editions of works such as 'Islamey'.
Unpublished and incomplete works include: Nocturne in G sharp minor (1856); Mazurka in C sharp minor (1884), completed 54 bars; Piece in F sharp minor (1851), completed 62 bars; Witches Dance;
Elegie on the Death of a Mosquito; Fandango Etude (1856); Polonaise Brillante (1853); Chopin’s Scherzo No.2, with a Coda by Balakirev (1890s); Liszt’s Mazurka Brillante with a Coda by Balakirev (1890s).
There is also a transcription of Balakirev’s rarely heard symphonic poem Tamara. The liner notes are programme notes for a non-research audience.
