- The Introduction (126pp) is the only full account to date of the composition, context, circulation, collaborative authorship, and genre of Aubrey’s Brief Lives, based on extensive research into unpublished and dispersed manuscript and printed sources. The edited text (first complete edition) gives unprecedented attention to the materiality of an exceptionally complex, incomplete text, identifying the dates of composition over a 40-year period, the various hands in which it was written, and its relationship to a large body of lost work. To transcribe and publish it, a new set of computer macros in the typesetting language TeX was written.
