- This monograph is the result of sustained archival research, object analysis, and critical thinking undertaken over a decade. This new history of France's key early modern cultural institution is based on the visual-material analysis of nearly 250 paintings, prints, and sculptures, as well as written primary sources including 150 years of company minutes, letters, institutional documents, and artists' personal papers. Collecting this extensive body of material involved research in numerous libraries, archives, and museums in France. This extensive investigation led to critical insights into the ideologies, rituals, hierarchies, and relationships at the core of the early modern Paris art world.
