- This 120,000-word monograph of over 350 pages, the result of a decade of research, is the first comprehensive study of the history of a key cultural institution in the Habsburg Empire. It relies on extensive interdisciplinary research of previously unexplored archival material, both textual and visual, in several languages (Hungarian, German, Italian), and several countries (Hungary, Austria, Germany, Italy), and employing methods from cultural history, musicology and visual studies. Critically engaging with particularly complex and multilingual scholarship, the book revises accepted tenets in European cultural history, Habsburg studies, music history and musicology, and modern Hungarian history.
