- The article addresses a contemporary debate in global norms research, arguing that critical constructivist research needs to move beyond poststructural critiques of hegemony. To retain its critical impetus, research should prioritise the voice of agents forming its object of inquiry. Their articulations are not to be categorised based on theoretical lenses or methodological choices. Accordingly, the article proposes a double hermeneutic strategy that retains the agency of local actors. The approach is demonstrated empirically through a reconstruction of the meaning-in-use of the norms of “liberty” and “equality” in the context of reactions to FEMEN protests in the WANA region.
