- Method for identifying studies For the purpose of this review, relevant studies were identified through: (i) data base searches and (ii) reference list review. Data bases were searched using Library Plus, which provided access to a range of source materials including (but not limited to) PsychINFO, PsychARTICLES, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Grey literature was searched using Google Scholar. Searches were conducted using the terms categories OR categorisation OR categorization OR concept* AND development AND child*. Once identified, the reference lists of all sources were reviewed and any relevant studies retrieved. All terms were searched in the title and/or abstract. Inclusion criteria comprised studies conducted with typically developing pre-school aged children (2-5 years) in published peer-reviewed journals and specialists texts.
