- Based on research supported by a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, this 264-page monograph provides the first comprehensive account of language teaching and learning in the UK from its earliest documented beginnings to the present, encompassing both widely taught and lesser taught languages. It analyses the social history of foreign language education in Britain, and describes changing approaches, methods and techniques in language teaching. It draws on research in several UK archives to chart the history of language policies and assessment, and show the impact of these classroom-external factors on developments in language teaching and learning, especially in the 20th century.
