- Hashtag Islam explores the diverse ways digital technology shapes how Muslims across vast territories relate to religious authorities in fulfilling spiritual, mystical, and legalistic agendas. Based on extensive digital research, observation and analysis, the book shows how online rhetoric and social media are used to articulate religious faith and reinforce religious authority by different kinds of Muslim organisations and individuals. From Muslim comedians and women's rights advocates to jihad-oriented groups, such as the "Islamic State" and al-Qaeda, Hashtag Islam demonstrates that understanding cyber Islamic environments is crucial for the holistic interpretation of authority in contemporary Islam.
