- Originality: This study highlights the issues associated with the large quantities of excavated materials produced by urban infrastructure projects and discusses the manufacture of lightweight aggregate as a viable re-use option for these materials. Rigour: It reviews important published papers on aggregate production and highlights areas where further research is required to understand the parameters that affects the performance of manufactured lightweight aggregates. Significance: It is concerned with the high level of interest in the field of construction and building materials and reports on the production of lightweight aggregate using clay combined with other problematic industrial wastes.
