- In 2014 Newland developed the idea for a book, British Rural Landscapes on Film, that would for the first time bring together research focussing on the ways in which various British rural landscapes have been represented in cinema. He circulated a call for papers and made editorial decisions concerning which chapters would be included. He read and fed back on draft chapters, and edited and proof read the book manuscript. He ensured that the book offers new insights into how rural areas of Britain have been represented on film, from the silent era through both world wars and on into the twenty-first century. Newland researched and authored the substantial c.11,000-word Introduction, as well as a chapter on the film Blood on Satan’s Claw. Furthermore, Newland conducted and edited the two interviews in the book with the film directors Patrick Keiller and Gideon Koppel.
