- Cinema Approaching Reality [2015] is a 100,000-word monograph, which offers a substantial comparative reading between Chinese film theory from the 1920s and 1930s and its European counterpart. This monograph is considered the first of its kind. Prior to its publication, East Asian and European theories were considered culturally incompatible. Through extensive archival research into the works published in Shanghai and Hong Kong during these years, this book proves that these seemingly discrete epistemic spaces share many common concerns regarding the cinematographic image’s relationship to reality. These works can also offer insight into how we conceptualise cinema and media today.
