- Human chondrocytes successfully cultured while ultrasonically levitated for 28 days. Produced cartilage of higher quality/stiffness than traditional pellet culture with potential for cartilage repair. Lab on a Chip [I.F. 6.1] cover article, listed as “Recent Hot Article” and one of 2014’s Most Accessed Articles. Work generated media interest including appearances on BBC TV & radio, New Scientist video and CNN. Topic was the subject of plenary addresses (ISMM 2014, Singapore & Optofluidics 2016 Beijing). Follow-up funding (~£60k) from Gerald Kerkut Charitable Trust is extending work with embryonic stem cells and from WMR (~£80k) to lung tissue.
