- The Deadends – a celebration of a made-up culture is a curated exhibition of artefacts by Georgeson.
Georgeson has investigated the imaginary culture of the Deadends in a series of exhibitions, printed matter, and a film, The Deadends – In Search of Truth. This exhibition brought together artefacts, live performance and a multi-media installation to immerse the audience in the artefacts of an alien or ‘lost’ culture.
The exhibition draws on philosopher Jacques Rancière’s theory of ‘emancipatory practice’ to generate a collaborative space for making and exploring art, in which the meaning of art is actively created through encounters with a spectator. Employing different forms of expression (musical performance and live events), other artists to interpret the concept, and visitors to document their experience of the space, the exhibition nurtures a collective creative experience, creating works of fiction which give rise to ‘different realities, different forms of common sense … different spatiotemporal systems, different communities of words and things, forms and meanings’ (Rancière).
Events included a live performance of Deadend sonic artefacts, the Deadend Resonances, developed in collaboration with musician Andy Barrett and performances from Bettina Fung and (Maurice the Dodo) Calum F Kerr.
This project was made possible by an invitation to develop and curate an exhibition for the Studio One project in Wandsworth supported by the ACAVA educational charity.
