- India Conquered is a substantial (564 pages) work, offering an original account of the character of Britain’s presence in India over 250 years. It’s emphasis on the everyday practices of political power over that extended time required analysis from different perspectives and (geographical and demographic) contexts. The book combined extensive archival work in eight archives and engagement with a very large quantity of primary printed sources and secondary literature. To integrate the book’s multiple perspectives and locations over such a long time-period presented a significant conceptual and writing challenge.
