- A vital hub of poetry readings, performance, publications and radical politics in 1960s New York, the Umbra Workshop was a cornerstone of the African-American avant-garde. A Black Arts Poetry Machine is the first book-length study of this important group. Based on extensive and pioneering research across previously unexplored archival material, it is an output of extended scale and scope, which demonstrates a major contribution to the field through original interpretive frameworks.
