- This substantial research paper (c.27,000 words; 11 figures; 6 tables; 4 supplemental tables/datasets totalling c.15,000 words) comprises 5 years of data collection and analysis (from 2016 to 2020 inclusive) supported by 2 periods of sabbatical leave. It provides a database of 374 high-status burials across Europe (800-250 BC) and develops a contextual approach, integrating historical texts and archaeological evidence, to define the Celts, detailing the transition from Hallstatt to La Tène and back-dating the latter 100 years. Critical insights arise from a research process of extended scale and scope, a novel methodological approach and level of conceptualisation and cross-regional comparisons.
