- Double-weighted statement
- This British Academy-funded book demonstrates sustained research effort, engaging over a four-year period with under-researched, complex archives; primary sources (performance remnants, unpublished plays) were consulted at the John Rylands, Cadbury, V&A and Brotherton libraries, as well as the National Library of Scotland and the British Library. Much of the research involved a piecing together of ‘lost’ plays by comparing newspaper reviews, partial scripts, prompt copies, snippets of recordings, and diary reflections. It represents the substantial published output of the broader project which involved a collaboration with the Electrotheatre Stanislavsky in Moscow, which I visited in 2015.
