- Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is one of the most common healthcare-acquired infections accounting for approximately one-third of all device-related infections, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. Supported by EPSRC project (EP/P00301X/1), an Ag-PTFE nanocomposite coating for catheters was developed via a facile wet chemistry method, which displays excellent anti-infection efficacy against bacteriuria, extending the lifetime of silicone catheters from a mean of 6 days to over 40 days. The Ag-PTFE coated catheters also show good biocompatibility with fibroblast cells in culture, making it a prospective strategy to overcome current challenges in CAUTI.
