- This volume (599 pages, c.280 illustrations) is the first ever in-depth Mediterranean-wide survey on Roman villas in any language, the fruit of a seven-year long editorial project. The chapters by 31 specialists coherently analyse a vast range of sources and data which are difficult to access - either because unpublished or published in obscure venues. It investigates villas from different perspectives (architecture; society; economy) and in different contexts (geographical: all the Mediterranean regions; chronological: late Republic to late antiquity, including discussion of modern reception), while also presenting recent archaeological discoveries that will serve as a fundamental guide to future research.
