- The Reverbs series was composed, arranged and produced by Prof. Fallows in the context of ongoing research examining crossovers between sound and the visual arts, and investigating the conditions and potentialities of listening in resonant spaces. Reverbs was performed by the Colin Fallows Ensemble of which Fallows is the founder, composer, artistic director and producer. CFE is an electric guitar group dedicated to the performance of multi-layered soundworks, dense with microtones which generate numerous overtones through bespoke tuning to resonant spaces. The Reverbs series was composed by Fallows for prepared and treated electric guitars, ranging from mono-chordal sound canvases layered with overtones, through subtle shifting moiré patterns of drones and gestural sound-paintings, to raucous excursions in tone-bending noise that conjure up the presence of imaginary instruments. The works question the nature of sonic/spatial perception, the capacity and temper of amplitude and sonic reflection. Michael Bracewell framed the work and performances in the context of methods, presentation, creative strategies, concepts and works by Stravinsky, Kraftwerk, Gilbert & George, Brian Eno, and Bridget Riley. Following one-year’s rehearsals, CFE performed Reverbs in six progressive series at Wilkinson Gallery, London (16/01/15; 23/06/15; 14/10/15; 15/12/15; 29/06/17; 01/07/17), staged in collaboration with Boudicca. The performances received capacity audiences and CFE represented Wilkinson Gallery as part of Frieze London (14/10/15). The catalogue/programme essay by Bracewell, M. was published in Wallpaper* magazine online (two-million unique users per month). Performances were recorded live in ambisonic surround-sound by the British Library Sound Archive and published as limited edition artist’s multiple (300) on 180-gram vinyl and CD. The recordings are in permanent collections including: British Library Sound Archive; Research Centre for Artists’ Publications, Weserburg Museum of Modern Art, Bremen, Germany; SCCA-Ljubljana, Center for Contemporary Arts; International Centre of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenia; and the Archive of Recorded Sound, Stanford University, USA.
