- First work to manufacture curvilinear carbon fibre thermoplastic prepreg tows by steering. Steered plies offered up to 30% weight saving advantages over conventional straight fibre composites. This study characterises the quality and limiting radii for steered tows finding that minimum radii (a desirable trait) could be as low as 300-400mm which is around half that of comparable carbon fibre thermoset (epoxy) material so offering greater weight saving potential. Conference version of this work won the Collier/Hipersizer Best Structures paper (from around 250 papers) at the 2019 Scitech conference.
