- This is the first monographic book which analyses the legal, theological and broader debate on Muslim women as prayer leaders. It is the outcome of ten years of research on primary sources, mainly in Arabic, from the 8th to the 21st century. In addition to printed books, manuscripts have been consulted from collections at the British Library, SOAS and the Aga Khan libraries. It is complex in that it looks at the debate from the perspective of various disciplines and using multiple methodologies. It also includes, for the first time in one volume, arguments by Sunni, Shii and Sufi scholars.
