- Volume Three of the Great European Stage Directors (series editor Simon Shepherd) is edited by Jonathan Pitches and features three long essays - on Jacques Copeau, Theodore Komisarjevsky and Tyrone Guthrie - and an introduction. Pitches’ contribution comprised two functions. As editor: he sourced five international specialists in the field (balanced in gender terms), brokered new writing relationships in some cases, negotiated the scope and focus of each essay with contributing authors (working in pairs); edited three drafts of each chapter; liaised with production, managed images and chapter abstracts and compiled the index. As author: Pitches wrote the general introduction (3400 words) and co-authored the chapter on Komisarjevsky (22500 words) with Claire Warden. The volume was conceived to actively encourage genuine co-authorship, so all chapters were co-designed and co-written over a year before being shared with the editor. In plain quantitative terms Pitches’ contribution to the long chapter was 50% and for the introduction, 100%.
