- A ‘follow-up’ of a kind to the groundbreaking Cultures of Pessimism (2001) this book again takes a signature humanities approach to a concern more usually addressed within the social sciences – namely how institutions of various kinds (but principally democratic political institutions, the workplace, the family, religion and psychotherapy) are engaged in the promotion of hope. The breadth and depth of engagement with topics and its synthesis of a range of literatures from across disciplines (including social and evolutionary psychology, human resource management and organisational studies, intellectual history and parenting guidance) requires and justifies extended treatment.
