- This is a monograph of 280 pages. It is based on original research in 22 French national and regional archives totalling over 3,000 documents, material evidence from international museums, and extensive new statistical data. It utilises this evidence to demonstrate the impact of global trading links on the French state’s practices of policing, its industrial and scientific programmes, on knowledge transfer, industrial espionage, smuggling, consumer cultures, and on the development of Enlightenment economic liberalism.
