- This work took four years to research and write and is approximately 60,000 words in length. The research involved initial qualitative interviews and travel to Guyana, then preliminary family archive research. In 2018 I undertook a year of further archival and secondary research in the Eccles Centre Collection at the British Library. I researched race science in the Enlightenment and the history of slavery and indenture, including the production of sugar and other plantation practices, to frame the plantation structure as representative of contemporary inequality.
