- This monograph is the product of seven years’ research in libraries and manuscript collections in Britain, Bulgaria, Greece and Italy. It represents the first full-length study in English of the career of Theophilus of Alexandria (385-412), engaging all relevant sources and scholarship on him (in Greek, Latin, English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Russian). The research is interdisciplinary as it relies on classical rhetorical theory to explain the apparent success of Theophilus as leader of the Egyptian church at a time when the province was at the heart of the political and religious life of the Roman Empire.
