- This 288-page book is based on previously-unused material from eight archives in China and Taiwan. Chinese archives do not permit use of digital cameras, allow limited amounts of photocopying, and often do not have digital catalogues, so gathering materials takes much longer than it does in other countries. Several of the chapters deal with nineteenth-century Chinese history, for which the language of the sources is closer to Classical Chinese than Modern Standard Chinese. Data collection and analysis required at least four years. It is the first book-length history of Liangshan in either English or Chinese.
